Sebastiaan Kemner

Sebastiaan Kemner (1990) studied with Jörgen van Rijen, Pierre Volders, Remko de Jager and Ben van Dijk at the conservatories of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. In 2015 he completed his Master studies with the highest distinction. Between 2012 and 2014 Sebastiaan was also part the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker, a two year internship with the famous Berlin orchestra.

Sebastiaan won prizes at different national and international competitions, among which the Prinses Christina Concours and the Stichting Jong Muziektalent Nederland. At the latter he was elected Dutch Young Musician of the Year 2010 by an international jury. In 2013 Sebastiaan won the Aeolus International Competition for Wind Instruments in Düsseldorf, one of the most important competitions for his instrument. During the International Trombone Festival in New York in 2014, he won both the first prize with the Thein Brothers Quartet, as the individual Frank Smith Tenor Trombone Competition.

As a soloist Sebastiaan regularly performs in recitals on all main stages in The Netherlands and with orchestras from both his home country and abroad. He also made many concert tours through Europe, China and the US.

In the summer of 2015 Sebastiaan became Artist in Residence of the annual NJO Muziekzomer of the Dutch National Youth Orchestra.

Also together with his duo partner, pianist Andrea Vasi, Sebastiaan is always looking for expansion of the repertoire and creating exciting programmes. Sebastiaan played numerous world premieres already, amongst others of solo concertos written by Mike Svoboda and Milika Kishino. A new composition by Theo Verbey is expected next year.

In 2012 he became the newest member of the New Trombone Collective, a very active ensemble which organizes many concerts, tours, recordings and the very successful biennial European trombone festival Slide Factory.

Sebastiaan often plays on an incidental basis in orchestras and ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Ensemble.

Since 2018 Sebastian is main subject teacher for classical music, trombone at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague (Netherlands).
